The way Lucifer’s lips were against her neck, the way he’d breathed her in, his warm breath making her shiver – Jess was freaking out.

Why the fuck was he doing this? Was he trying to get her to make a mistake because she was distracted by just how hot it had been to see him fight her, to see him grin when he’d bled – to see the life that had suddenly filled his eyes?

It was definitely a tactic she wasn’t used to. Doc had never tried to hit on her in the middle of a fight, and somehow his request to make him bleed again sounded like a come on.

What the hell was wrong with him? What the hell was wrong with her?

“I don’t have any magic,” she finally managed, struggling against him, testing for weak spots or openings.

But Lucifer had thousands of years to train and practice and learn anything his heart had desired. Not only that, but he was right. The devil was still stronger than her, if not by much. That strength combined with his sheer size and experience was going to make her lose unless she could do something about his magic.

“You just teleported,” he told her, pulling back to grin at her. “Though you probably didn’t realize it. Do you know how rare it is for a demon to be able to teleport but possess no magic?”

“I’m not a demon,” she hissed, angling her body to throw him off at the next opportunity.

“Oh, you most definitely are, I can see the hellfire in your eyes.” Lucifer smirked as he looked down at her, so close to her face that if she moved wrong, she’d kiss him on accident.

“Why are you doing this?” she demanded, ready to risk it all and bite his fucking face if she had to. “I don’t have any magic! I am not special. I am nothing!” Jess sank her teeth into his jaw and bit down hard enough she tasted blood.

But it wasn’t like anything she’d ever smelled or tasted before in her life. It wasn’t like cinnamon or sulphur, but something…something sweet and electric.

Lucifer yanked back, making her canines tear through his skin and his growl reverberated through the massive training room, sounding like a thousand wolves hunting in the darkest, longest night.

It made her shiver, and the blood that poured over her face made her even more frantic until all she could see was blood covered snow and a body hanging in an apple tree, swinging in the winter wind.

When she could finally see again, Jess was on top of Lucifer, hand on his throat, burning him, and all he did was grin up at her like she’d made him proud.

Instantly she let go and went to roll off, but his hands gripped her hips tight and held her in place.

“Take a breath,” he told her, that deep voice resonating in her bones from that position. “Tell me what just happened.”

Jess looked down at her hands and saw fire.
